Irish Wolfhounds do not know aggression. They are well-balanced family dogs with a friendly, gentle disposition. They are loyal to their owner and extremely docile. They will rarely do cross-lying and they make a sensible impression. They are also hardened and patient. Irish Wolfhounds are not suitable as a guard dog or defense dog. They are real human friends who are happiest when they can be part of the family. They therefore get along well with human children and peers. The Irish Wolfhound is a Big Friendly Giant.
The shoulder height of an Irish Wolfhound is minimum 79 cm in males and 71 cm in females. This makes it the largest purebred dog we know. The weight of a male is at least 55 kg and a bitch at least 41 kg. Its coat is of medium length and should always be rough and harsh on the body. The hairs around the eyes and muzzle are slightly longer and wiry. Colors commonly found in an Irish Wolfhound’s coat are gray, red, black, fawn and white. The colors may or may not be brindle. Irish Wolfhounds also have a ring beard.
An Irish Wolfhound’s coat should be brushed or combed regularly. You may also need to have his coat professionally plucked to remove dead hair. It is also necessary to clean the Irish Wolfhound’s beard often. These quiet dogs rarely let out their deep voices. They are eager to learn and easy to train. As a puppy they have to learn not to pull on a leash. Irish Wolfhounds are greyhounds. So by nature they are hunters. They live in a large garden and need long walks. They also like to play games with the whole family. The Irish Wolfhound is about 9 years old.
