‘Boerboel’ means ‘farmer dog’ in Afrikaans. This breed was originally bred in South Africa to protect families from wild animals. With its balanced, confident and calm disposition, the Boerboel makes an excellent family dog. He is attached to his owner and loyal. He will do everything he can to guard his territory and to protect and defend his family members. He gets along well with people and animals. He is especially concerned about the children of the family. This loving, family-friendly dog is quite intelligent and very easy to train. You can teach him almost anything.
Despite its gentle nature, the Boerboel has a robust and intimidating appearance. Males grow to a minimum of 66 cm and females 61 cm. Their outer coat is short and straight but also supple and shiny. The undercoat is dense and soft. Boerboels can have a black coat but also shades of brown, (dark) red, fawn to light yellow. Their color is smooth or brindle and they have a black mask.
Boerboels require a lot of mental and physical exercise. Despite their enormous size, they are surprisingly manoeuvrable. They need a lot of space and don’t like to be alone. But they usually do not have many health problems and require little care. Their coat sheds an average amount of hair. Weekly brushing and monthly bathing will help keep a Boerboel’s coat healthy. Good dental, ear and nail hygiene are also important for this breed.
