An Australian Cattle Dog or ‘cattle dog’ is a real working dog. He is not only energetic but also courageous, fearless and determined. He feels very responsible towards his owner. He dutifully watches over the welfare of his family and is kind to children. This alert and loyal instinctual protector is naturally somewhat suspicious of strangers. This is an intelligent breed and you can tell. Australian Cattle Dogs appear calm and sensible. Yet they certainly do not lack energy.

Appearance

The weight of an Australian Cattle Dog varies between 15 and 20 kg. The average height for males is 45 to 51 cm. The females usually reach a height of 43 to 48 cm. Their symmetrical build and their sturdy and stocky build are typical for their appearance. They are admired for their powerful and muscular appearance. Australian Cattle Dogs have a beautiful straight weather resistant coat with special colors. However, the puppies are always white. Adult dogs can have heavy markings on the head of blue, dark red, rusty brown or black. Furthermore, they are speckled red or blue all over the coat.

The coat of the Australian Cattle dog is best brushed weekly with a strong brush. During the moulting period, his coat needs extra attention. He sheds every season. Do you want to wash it? Only do that when it is really necessary and with a mild shampoo. Although Australian Cattle Dogs hardly bark, they do better in homes with large gardens and rural settings. If they are not stimulated enough and are bored, they can destroy things. On average they live to be 12 years old.
