The Doberman Pinscher is a German purebred dog bred to guard and protect. At the same time, it is a strong working dog with great stamina. That combination makes him quite popular. Dobermans are active, alert and intelligent. They get along well with children as long as they are well socialized. In that case, other pets are also no problem. When confronted by an uninvited visitor, the Dobermann rises threateningly. But when his owner makes it clear that everything is okay, he lies down again.
A Dobermann is powerful and muscular yet elegant. It weighs between 32 and 42 kg. Females reach an average of 63 to 68 cm shoulder height. In males this is 70 cm. The Dobermann’s coat is short and smooth. The color is usually black or brown with rust-red, well-defined markings. A Dobermann’s muzzle is quite deep and it has almost round, dark eyes. These dogs are graceful apparitions.
Dobermans are used for a variety of tasks: from guarding and herding sheep to pest control. They require little maintenance. Occasional brushing or wiping the coat with a damp cloth is sufficient and minimizes hair loss. Oral and dental hygiene are very important in this breed. It is also important to protect it from extremely cold temperatures. A Doberman will ground in an apartment if necessary if you give him enough time. He needs plenty of exercise and stimulation daily. He loves playing and romping with the family and going for a walk. Dobermans live to be about 12 years old.
