A Shar Pei or Chinese Fighting Dog is a playful, devoted dog with a fairly dominant character. Fortunately, he is not aggressive. He is alert and confident. When in danger, these dogs will spring into action and guard their families where necessary. They remain friendly to strangers. Furthermore, they are calm and modest and they make a balanced impression. They can live in harmony with children they have grown up with and also cats. But dogs are sometimes a problem because they are militant.
The Chinese Shar Pei is known for its crumpled appearance. He has wrinkles all over his body and his eyes have a recognizable frowning look. Its name means ‘sand skin’. This powerful dog weighs between 18 and 29 kg. The shoulder height is between 48 and 58 cm. Its hard coat is short and bristly and always a solid color. Black and brown are common, but also red and ‘fawn’. The Shar Pei has a blue tongue and blue pigment.
The skin folds of a Shar Pei should be regularly checked and cleaned. In general, the Shar Pei does not bark much. With the right upbringing, he can live happily without a garden as long as he takes regular walks. A Shar Pei lives about 11 to 12 years on average.
