Weimaraner

Character

This German pedigree dog is eager to work and energetic, with great stamina. Smart and watchful, he is happy to protect his family from enemies. His ancestors were often taken on wolf or bear hunting. On average, it clicks well between the Weimaraner and children. When well socialized, he gets along with cats and other dogs. Always ready to please, he is an extremely sweet, protective companion to a devoted owner.

Appearance

Weimaraners are athletic and of moderate size. They have a muscular, elegant and balanced body. Their long snouts, wide-set amber eyes and long, wide drooping ears are typical. The male of the Weimaraner is on average about 59 to 70 cm high. The female is slightly smaller at about 57 to 65 cm. On average, these dogs weigh 24 to 35 kg. A Weimaraner comes in two coat types: short and long. The short version is the most popular. It has dense hair and little undercoat. The long-haired Weim sometimes has an undercoat. Common coat colors in this breed are silver, fawn brown, or mouse gray. There may be small white markings on their chest and / or toes.

Other particulars

The Weimaraner or ‘Silver Ghost’ is especially popular in Germany itself. They are beautiful hunting dogs but demanding in terms of maintenance. When brushing daily with a wide tooth comb, it is important to leave the undercoat on. In the moulting period you can easily remove the loose coat with a shepherd’s rake. Ear and eye hygiene is also important for this breed. This breed was not made for outdoor living or in a kennel. A Weimaraner needs a family and a home with a large, securely fenced yard in which to run around to his heart’s content. These versatile, talented dogs are used for police work, search and rescue, and tracking. They usually reach an age of 12 to 13 years.
