Character

The Scottish Terrier, also known as the “Scottie,” is a breed with a brave and independent character. These small yet valiant dogs are renowned for their loyal and protective nature towards their family. Despite their small size, they don’t let anyone push them around and can be reserved towards strangers, making them excellent watchdogs. Scotties are also very playful and enjoy interacting with their owners, though they maintain their independence and sometimes need moments to themselves. Their intelligence and determination make them eager for mental challenges, but it also means they require consistent and patient training.

Appearance

Scottish Terriers have a distinctive appearance with their unique profile, long head, and short legs, making them immediately recognizable. They have a hard, wiry top coat and a soft undercoat, providing protection against the weather. Scotties are generally black in color, but they can also be wheaten or brindle (striped). Their eyes are small, dark, and almond-shaped, giving them a penetrating gaze. Their tail is typically straight and carried upright. The average height of an adult Scottish Terrier is between 25 and 28 cm at the shoulder, and they weigh about 8 to 10 kilograms.

Other Particularities

Scottish Terriers distinguish themselves not only by their characteristic appearance but also by their robustness and longevity, with many of them reaching the respectable age of 12 to 15 years. These loyal companions are remarkably adaptable and can live as well in an apartment as in a house with a large garden, provided they get a sufficient amount of exercise. Their double coat – a hard, wiry top coat and a soft undercoat – requires regular maintenance, including trimming every few months, to keep them in top condition. Scotties are particularly independent, but they form strong bonds with their family and get along well with children, especially if they are well socialized from an early age. They offer a perfect combination of independence and loyalty, making them ideal pets for those looking for a dog with character and charm.
