Originating in England, the Golden Retriever is perhaps one of the best known and most typical family dogs. He is known for his friendly, social and balanced character. Retrievers are good-natured, easy going and not at all aggressive. These gentle dogs have a high cuddly factor and are gentle and reliable with children. You can also put them with other pets, even cats. A Golden Retriever is a wonderful purebred dog to put to work and a fantastic family pet.
Golden Retrievers have a balanced, powerful body. They have dark brown eyes, a sturdy straight snout and hanging ears. The Golden Retriever male can reach 56 to 61 cm at shoulder height. The female measures 51 to 56 cm in height. Adult Retrievers weigh between 27 and 33 kg. Their coat is flat or wavy with a water-resistant undercoat. The coat color is gold or cream shade. They may have some white hair on the front of the chest.
Goldens have a strong sense of smell and great adaptability. They have a loud bark but bark very little. They have to exercise intensively for 40 to 60 minutes every day. Agile and obedient, they are great for dog training, dog sports or other dog activities. They are generally very sporty and love to swim. Retrievers like to be given concrete tasks. They are used for drug detection, therapy and assistance for the disabled. They are also very talented in retrieving game for hunters. ‘Retriever’ therefore means ‘collector’ in Dutch.
A Golden Retriever sheds profuse hair, especially in the fall and spring. Brushing him daily will remove a lot of loose hair from the coat. Golden Retrievers love to eat and can easily become overweight if you overfeed them. Give him measured portions at agreed times to avoid health problems. This gentle golden family friend usually reaches an age of 12 to 13 years.
