The American Cocker Spaniel is a gentle and (child) friendly dog. He also gets along well with other pets and guests. He often dares to be pushed around so you have to protect him well against wild games or rough children’s pranks. This sociable dog is lively and playful and loves water. He is also intelligent and obedient. His favorite activities are swimming and retrieving.
An American cocker weighs between 11 and 13 kg and measures a maximum of 38 cm high. You can recognize it by its long hanging ears, round head and square, wide muzzle. His eyes are charming and subtle almond shaped. Its semi-long silky coat is slightly wavy on the legs, belly, chest and ears. The hair is shorter and finer on its head. This first-rate dog comes in different colors: beige, fur, rust, chocolate brown, sand brown and black. For the character Lady from the Disney movie Lady and the Tramp An American Cocker Spaniel was chosen because of their graceful appearance. They have a slightly different body type from the English Cocker Spaniel and are slightly smaller.
The American Cocker Spaniel’s impressive medium-length coat needs to be well maintained. Brushing and washing often is not a luxury. It is also recommended to have his hair cut every three months. Then the moulting periods are very good! American cockers are ideal house dogs, although they are typically hunting or farm dogs. They also adapt to an apartment and can therefore enjoy themselves independently. They must be educated socially so that they do not become timid at a later age. Their life expectancy is 13 to 14 years.
