A Chihuahua is sometimes mockingly called a lap dog. And it is indeed a real companion animal that likes to be with its owner as much as possible. Chihuahuas may be small, but they often have a big personality. They are typically playful, observant and intelligent. But they can be a bit quirky.

Appearance

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog in the world. So you can easily recognize these dogs. Their weight is between 500 and 3000 grams. You have short-haired and long-haired Chihuahuas. The coat of a short-haired Chihuahua is smooth and shiny, that of the long-haired Chihuahua is a bit softer and finer. The hair of this cute darling is usually a bit longer around the ‘pants’ and tail, around the collar and on the ears. Coat colors vary greatly in this breed.

Long-haired Chihuahuas need to be brushed several times a week. The short-haired ask for less grooming. With these it is sufficient to brush them only occasionally. You should wash a Chihuahua every month with a mild dog shampoo, but be careful not to let them get water in their ears. Oral hygiene is also very important with this breed. Finally, you must also protect them from the cold when you go for a walk with them. This small, lively dog is ideal for an apartment or flat. The average age is 13 to 14 years, but it can live up to 18 years.
